Texas Tech, Arizona reschedules canceled 2020 football game for 2034, compared
Texas Tech and Arizona have rescheduled their canceled football game in 2020 for the 2034 season, with the game scheduled for September 9 of the same year, according to a report by FBSchedules.com. The match was originally scheduled to be played last September in Lubbock as the second stop in a home series between schools before being ruled out due to the impacts of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The announced decision to reschedule the match 14 years after its originally scheduled date has not been confirmed by either school. The Red Raiders currently have at least one Power 5 opponent scheduled each year through 2032, while the Wildcats have a current or future Power Five opponent – a series between BYU and Arizona is slated for several years – through 2033. .
Texas Tech and Arizona have met 33 times in total. Texas Tech leads the series with 26 wins to just five over Arizona. Schools are tied twice.
The 2019 game was the first time the schools have met since 1986. The Wildcats beat the Red Raiders 28-14 in the 2019 game, which was played in Tucson.
The 2020 game at Lubbock has been called off along with a series of other non-conference games across the sport due to discrepancies in COVID-19 programming policies from one conference to another. The Pac-12 announced in July 2020 that teams would not play non-conference games in 2020 due to concerns surrounding the virus. In the end, the Pac-12 decided to postpone their fall sports season before reversing that decision, although an abbreviated Pac-12 football season did not begin until November. Arizona failed to win a game before finally firing the third-year head coach Kevin sumlin at the end of the year. He was replaced by the New England Patriots assistant Jedd Fisch.
Texas Tech, meanwhile, played a 10-game season. The Red Raiders opened their season with a non-conference game against Houston Baptist before playing a full Big 12 schedule as the conference voted to move forward with their fall football season. Texas Tech finished 4-6 in their sophomore year under the direction of the head coach Matt wells, who was eventually fired in October and replaced by Joey mcguire.
Texas Tech leaves the 2021 regular season with a 6-6 score, winning an offer to face Mississippi State in the Liberty Bowl next week. Texas Tech has reached bowl eligibility for the first time since 2017 as it now prepares for a reunion with former Red Raiders head coach Mike leach when they face the Bulldogs. Arizona, meanwhile, went 1-11, breaking a losing streak that stretched back to the 2019 season.
