Shot fired during a high school football game in Manatee County

MANATEE COUNTY, FL – A high school football game was halted after someone fired a single shot. The police are now investigating.

Police said the shooting happened around 9:30 p.m. Wednesday during a football game at Palmetto High School.

Towards the end of the game, police said a group of high school students started fighting near the sideline.

As school staff and police moved towards the group to break up the fight, a single gunshot was heard. The group immediately dispersed and officers found a handgun on the ground. There were no injuries, police said.

Palmetto police investigators said they identified a person of interest as the shooter, but were not releasing any information pending a positive identification. There have been no other arrests and the investigation is ongoing.
